Makerspaces – Making a Difference and Building Communities
Makerspaces inspires an interest in science, technology, design, and 21st century skills in the people who are served by the library. The library users or patrons can work together, alone, or with library staff on creative projects that require specialized equipment and software. They can be of varying ages to learn through direct experimentation and from each other.
The San Diego
Public Library’s mission “To inspire lifelong learning through connections to
knowledge and each other” is in line with the makerspace’s idea, purpose, and
goal. They have Laser Printing, 3D printing, dye sublimation machine, sewing
and cutting machine to help the patrons.
There are
also Community Science Workshop Network integrated with the libraries that
initiate interests in young minds to weld together a go-kart, sew or knit,
build furniture, plant flowers, or repair bikes. It’s a place to test your
limits and explore your potential in the safety of a library or community
surrounded by mentors and adults who truly want the best of you. The result is
seeing confidence and emerging personality in these young minds.
I hope to
see the shift and change in school culture in more teachers bringing makerspaces
to their classrooms and bring a difference in kids learning.
